Town Vs Irlam FC Match Preview Town Vs Irlam FC Match Preview

The North West Counties Premier League campaign kicks off this Saturday and sees Wythenshawe Town travel to west Manchester to face Irlam FC.

Pre season is officially over and Town are now preparing for the start of the new NWCFL season. After an impressive first campaign at this level, James Kinsey’s side will be looking to keep up the same standards this upcoming season, as they did in the 2021/22 season. With a good retention rate of key players, it looks as though The Chicken Hut Blues are ready for the challenges that lie ahead of them. For example, the ability to maintain a high work rate and deliver consistently good performances week in week out, like the second half of last season, are going to be important areas that the coaching staff will be working at with the players both on and off the field.

In a recent catch up with Manager James Kinsey, he reiterates to us just how excited his team and coaching staff are for the opening game of the season.

“We are itching for the season to start now. It’s been a long lay off since last season. We came so close to gaining promotion last season and it has been hard to sit around with nothing to do following that. You just want to get back playing after such a great season.”

This clearly shows Kinsey’s tenacity and determination for success this time round and after the clubs first season at this level was rewarded without any silverware. Nevertheless, him and his coaching staff can be very proud of their achievements last season, as third place in the league won him The NWCFL Manager of the Season award, not including the excellent FA Vase run Town endured by reaching the Quarter Final.

Furthermore, Kinsey describes how he has prepared his side for the new campaign and how pre season helped with his planning.

“We have ensured everybody has got similar minutes in the bank. A lot of teams like to go with what they’re going with in the build up to the season but we have mixed things up weekly. It was important everybody got their fitness in because we have no weak links in the squad. Everybody will be playing a big part this season so we have had to get everybody to a level.”

After several additions to the squad over the summer break, it has been vital for Kinsey to incorporate some of his new players to his already strong squad. New centre back, James Dwyer has definitely impressed fans with early glimpses of his aerial prowess and his physical attributes, as well as midfielders Andreas Bianga and Arthur Feudjio who have offered good physicality and can cover ground on the pitch. Youngster Brandon Newell has shown signs of flare and excitement but unfortunately picked up an injury late into pre season.

Irlam FC certainly didn’t give Town any easy games last season. After a defeat at Saturday’s venue early on last season and a narrow victory at home, it is safe to say this game will not be plain sailing. The gaffer has explained to us that making an improvement on last season’s performances is essential going into this game.

“Irlam were very good when we played them last season. They beat us at their place so this is one of those games we want to make an improvement on. We know how they like to play and it should make for an interesting game.”

In contrast to last season, the bulk of the team has a clear understanding of what is expected of them on a matchday, both performance wise and standards wise, and this could ultimately leave them in good stead to push onto a solid spot in the table come the end of the campaign.

The match on Saturday will be a first look at Kinsey’s squad going into the approaching season and it is clear from Kinsey’s perspective what you can expect from his side.

“People can expect a hunger about us. We’ve learnt that it’s a marathon, not a sprint. Every year we kick on from Christmas. I can’t explain that, but it’s there in black and white from previous seasons. If we can be amongst it at the turn of the year, I wouldn’t bet against us! It’s how we perform up until Christmas for me that will define where we end up. The demands of the lads have been superb. We’re just itching for 3pm on Saturday. We can’t wait!”
