Avro FC 1-0 Wythenshawe Town Avro FC 1-0 Wythenshawe Town

One goal was enough to settle the Frank Hannah Manchester Premier Cup tie between Avro FC and Wythenshawe Town at the Vestacare Stadium.

The game which was a preliminary round fixture for the right to play Chadderton in the first round proper started a very even contest. It wasn’t until eleven minutes were on the clock that the visitors created the games opening opportunity when Grant Spencer drilled an effort from 30 yards over the top of Jordan Latham’s crossbar.

On 15 minutes Avro went close to opening the scoring with their first opportunity of the game, after winning a free kick just outside the penalty area fullback Lee Neville saw his effort hit the crossbar and bounce over. Just five minutes later and it was Town’s turn to threaten from a set piece. Again another fullback in Jonny Poizer had Latham scrambling across goal as he saw his left-footed effort pushed around the post.

Six minutes later Latham was called into action again when a ball from the left by Poizer was put into the path of Jake Parker but his effort was well kept out by the Avro shot-stopper.

Avro’s best chance of the half came just before the interval when a terrific ball from the right was met by Michael Norton in front of goal but he headed wide of the upright.

Halftime: Avro 0-0 Wythenshawe Town

The second half started the way the first one ended with both sides looking to get on the front foot and create chances. Town had a corner early on in the half which was taken by Grant Spencer and Cial Callacher met but couldn’t guide his header goalwards and then with 52 minutes on the clock the hosts took the lead.

A ball was played wide left and despite a shout for offside the Avro winger played a ball into the area which the Town defence didn’t deal with and it fell to Ryan Hanson who squared it to Michael Norton to convert from close range.

Just moments after taking the lead the hosts could have doubled their advantage when a ball from Lee Neville picked out Ryan Hanson but the Avro wingers effort went across goal and out of play.

Just beyond the hour mark Wythenshawe Town goalkeeper Bruno Da Silva have to leave the field of play following a nasty collision and he was replaced in net by outfield player Grant Spencer.

Spencer’s first action in goal was to see a Hanson strike across goal go just wide of the upright after Avro had counter-attacked a Wythenshawe corner.

With just ten minutes of normal time remaining Town had the opportunity to draw level after Jake Parker was upended in the penalty area. Substitute Gavin Salmon stepped up but his effort was well kept out by Latham in the Avro goal after he went down low to his left and managed to hold onto the ball.

In the last few minutes of the game, Avro had a couple of chances to double their advantage firstly when a long ball over the Town defence was met by Joe Bevan but his goal-bound effort was well saved by Spencer.

The stand-in Town shot-stopper was again called into action in the last few seconds of the game, after an Avro counter-attack saw a two-on-one situation with only Connor Brotherton back and the Town defender managed to block the first effort but it rebounded right into the path of the Avro attacker but his second effort was well held by Spencer.
